58th Edition of the Carthage International Festival

Sara Baras: Elegance in a High-Flying Performance

A new evening filled with magic took place last night at the Roman amphitheater of Carthage. On Tuesday, July 23, 2024, as part of the 58th edition of the Carthage International Festival, the incomparable modern flamenco virtuoso Sara Baras graced the stage. Accompanied by the musicians and singers of her company, the "Ballet Flamenco Sara Baras," she took the audience on a unique journey through Andalusian art, which she seeks to reinvent in her unique and contemporary style.

The evening was elevated by the presence of the Spanish Ambassador and a large number of the Spanish community residing in Tunisia. The event featured a series of choreographic pieces from a show titled "Vuela," created in homage to the maestro of flamenco guitar, the internationally renowned Paco de Lucia.

With grace, elegance, finesse, and refinement, Sara Baras, dressed first in classic all-black attire and then in earth-toned dresses, impressed with every movement, step in crescendo, and clap of her hands. The emotional power she conveyed was in perfect harmony with the guitar, violin, and percussion sounds, as well as the voices singing of love, life, and death.

Whether performing solo, in a group with other dancers, or in a duo with a male dancer, Sara Baras, a true stage phenomenon, captivated the audience. Despite the language barrier, she introduced a new form of flamenco to the public, different from the traditional castanets and bright red costumes they remembered.

For nearly two hours, the dancer and choreographer paid tribute through "Vuela" to the veneration of this great composer and guitarist for the art of flamenco, achieving a perfect blend of musical poetry and poetic music. Amidst countless applause and cries of "Olé Olé," an elusive and mysterious charm was evident, admired only through the protagonists' performance. This high-caliber show will certainly enrich the annals of the Carthage International Festival, whose mission is to introduce new genres of world music each time.
